Northwest
Louisiana has many opportunities for the nature photographer. My backyard and
surrounding woods has yielded many great nature moments, including white-tailed
deer, a family of red foxes, numerous migrating
bird species each spring and fall such as Hooded Warblers and Rose-breasted
Grosbeaks, plus other birds and butterflies all year round.
Public
areas include Bickham Dickson park in Caddo Parish, especially for birds. Also
Bodcau Wildlife Management Area, Soda Lake Wildlife Management Area, Lock and
Dam #5 on the Bossier Parish side and anywhere
up and down the Red River from a boat.
Most
of my nature photography time is spent at the Red River National Wildlife
Refuge where I've been documenting the many species of birds, mammals, insects
and plants found on the Refuge. The
headquarters Unit
is located just south of the Jimmie Davis bridge in Bossier City. This 460 acre
Unit is open to the general public by walking in from the main gate. However, a
multi-million dollar visitor's center is in the works and is expected to be completed by 2011. The
visitor's center will be a great educational opportunity to visit and learn
about Louisiana's newest National Wildlife Refuge. About 20 miles south of LSUS
is the Bayou Pierre
Unit of the Red River National Wildlife Refuge. This unit is open to the public
and has several trails open year round. Hunting is allowed, so keep that in
mind if you choose to visit. Walking along the levee can give some great chances for photographing
Northern Harriers and Red-tailed Hawks.
